Approach and Impact

Our approach is informed by three beliefs

  • 1. Getting to impact at scale requires systems-changing initiatives that leverage the two engines that operate at scale: Government and/or Market;
  • 2. Solving complex social issues requires a portfolio of initiatives targeting the highest leverage root cause challenges in the system, and there are no silver bullets;
  • 3. All of the above requires a long-term commitment, rooted in partnerships with local leaders and funders.

Why our partners work with us?

  • We are akin to an Executive team expansion to drive strategy and execution of complex multi-stakeholder initiatives targeting systems change, forming joint and embedded teams as “insider-outsiders”. For an NGO, we embedded 2-3 executives into the leadership team over the past 4 years, scaling their impact by 62x to reach 2m beneficiaries a year. Together with a funder, we formed a joint team embedding 5 team members, to coordinate the execution of a large multi-stakeholder initiative in poverty alleviation, involving 15 NGOs;
  • We develop strategies that have a proven track record of leading to real world implementation: Our strategies have shaped the active deployment of more than 800m USD in philanthropic giving covering poverty alleviation, education, early child development, mental health, positive ageing, and philanthropic sector building.
  • We own the vision for impact at scale and we have ‘skin in the game’: We manage portfolios of our own “strategic bets for impact at scale”, and actively seek out long-term partners who share our vision and are uniquely positioned for scale. Our interactions sharpen each other, and the resulting initiatives are more impactful than anything we could have done alone.

JC PROJECT LIFT
(Poverty Alleviation Portfolio)

Voyage is an incubation partner of JC PROJECT LIFT, a five-year Trust-Initiated Project that pilots an urban graduation approach as a targeted, comprehensive, and time-bound poverty alleviation model to uplift impoverished households residing in transitional housing. JC PROJECT LIFT is designed by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. The Trust also created and funded the Project.

The Project enhances employability, builds family capacity and financial literacy for 4,200 underprivileged households. It also seeks to improve the well-being and expand social support networks for 14,450 families in 25 transitional housing sites across 11 districts. By addressing the multidimensional nature of poverty, JC PROJECT LIFT demonstrates potential for replication in other local and overseas housing settings, and mainstreaming as a standalone wraparound employment support service through pioneering an innovative pay for success empowering employment service model.

Mobility and Livelihoods Portfolio

There are 750million internal migrants globally, who are highly vulnerable to economic and climate shocks, and largely uncovered by safety net social protection systems. Since 2018, Voyage has been a strategic partner with a grassroots collaborative which has now facilitated access to social protection for over 4 million migrant families. The collaborative works across 5 countries in South Asia and South East Asia and aims to facilitate social protection for 15m by 2028, whilst supporting Governments to improve social protection systems to sustainably deliver a safety net at scale.

Assistive Technology Multiplier (ATX)
(Disability Inclusion Portfolio)

900m people in low middle income countries (LMICs) lack access to life-changing assistive technology (e.g. hearing aids, prosthetics, orthotics, wheelchairs). Scaling product and distribution innovations with patient capital is key, as Government and charities are unlikely to sustainably meet the demand with existing products that are unaffordable, and costly distribution models. ATX is a first-of-its-kind Assistive Technology (AT)-focused fund that merges impact investing with venture-building expertise, deploying patient capital to revolutionize AT access in low and middle-income countries, fostering innovation and large-scale impact, while delivering returns. Voyage has been an incubation partner since 2019.

Local Depth, Global Reach

Voyage is a member of the GDI network of locally led and independently governed partners who share a vision for impact at scale. This enables Voyage to have local depth with global reach across the Americas, South Asia and Africa.

Collectively, our network has incubated ... for social impact.
