What it’s like to work here

Lucia Choi

Associate Director

“Working at Voyage has taught me the value of never settling for easy answers. Our team constantly pushes one another to reflect on whether we are truly solving the right problem, and to imagine the deeper change needed to create lasting impact. That spirit comes from a shared refusal to compromise, and a genuine commitment to social progress.

Although this process often means challenging our own assumptions and unlearning what we thought we knew yesterday, it is exactly this depth of understanding and broader perspective that helps us earn the trust of partners in the sector. Together, we are able to stand alongside them and contribute to meaningful change.”

Jennifer Chan

Associate Director

“I think there are three things about working at Voyage that together makes this a precious and unique experience that is hard to find. First, I’ve never worked my brain harder anywhere else – the intellectual depth and breadth required here means constant learning and challenging yourself to find solutions for very big and important social issues, no matter how much you’ve achieved or thought you knew. Second, despite the intellectual environment, there’s no deadweight on the team – everyone brings the best of their experience and skills to the table, making contributions that are critical to our impact missions. Third and perhaps one of the most important things for me, we personally like and enjoy spending time with each other, and that goes a long way especially in the most difficult times, be it working long hours or facing setbacks on projects.”

Yoori Kim

Senior Manager

“My day-to-day experience at Voyage can be summarized as the following:

1) identifying problems and trying to solve problems in the smartest, most effective ways possible, and,

2) in the process, being challenged and challenging one another.

This requires not only critical thinking and curiosity, but also a deep sense of self-awareness and reflection, willingness to be vulnerable with each other and fail, and trust that as a team we can get to better answers. Even after working at Voyage for five years, it still amazes me how much passion and intellectual rigor that each team member brings into work, while at the same time how extremely humble and down-to-earth they are. I may have joined Voyage for its vision and mission alignment, but it’s truly this team that keeps me going.”

Valerie Chiu

Senior Associate

“Joining Voyage has been an eye-opening experience—one that has redefined what it means to work in a purpose-driven, value-aligned environment.  Doing the right thing the right way often means balancing diverse perspectives, navigating ambiguity, and challenging established thinking. Many moments have challenged me intellectually and professionally, especially when no precedent or playbook exists —for example, our research for the Commission on Asian Philanthropy. Time and time again, I have witnessed how Voyage stays committed to an unwavering purpose of achieving impact at scale. What makes this journey meaningful, though, is the culture of trust and care—colleagues who invest in one another’s growth and model high standards through their actions. Voyage reminds me daily that meaningful work and a purpose-aligned community can go hand in hand.”

“I joined Voyage as a fresh graduate in 2020, and its focus on growth and development was exactly what I needed. I still remember thinking I might not even pass probation; Later, as an associate, it felt impossible to imagine becoming a senior associate — let alone a manager. Yet five years on, Voyage has truly expanded my sense of what’s possible. Throughout this journey, Lucia has been a model of leadership. Observing how she communicates externally and leads our team has shaped the way I approach my work. Over time, we’ve built a foundation of trust and mutual understanding that anchors my growth, and her timely guidance has consistently helped me push forward.”

Elevated my analytical rigor and data modelling through the firm’s apprenticeship culture, now producing analytical research rigorous enough to inform policy and practice and managing growing scope of work!

Benjamin Suen

“My journey highlights the different starting points to build a career at Voyage. I first joined during a gap semester internship, which served as my introduction to the firm's supportive environment. Working closely alongside the team, I learned what professional analyses look like in practice. Seeing how robust methodologies were used to direct significant philanthropic capital showed me that this work isn't just about good intentions—it is about driving measurable impact at scale. That early experience cemented my goal to dedicate my career to tackling complex and impactful challenges.

After graduation, I joined a management consulting firm, where I tackled problems for the largest companies. While the work was intellectually challenging, I found that delivering a brilliant strategy on paper felt hollow when it either stalled in execution or merely served to optimise a corporate bottom line. The drive to see meaningful strategies through to reality brought me back to Voyage full-time.

Now, in my role as a Senior Associate, Voyage’s culture of continuous apprenticeship remains central to my development. The firm actively nurtures talent, providing the opportunities and the support needed to stretch beyond our comfort zones. Working closely with leadership, I have elevated my analytical rigour—particularly in complex data modelling. Supported by the team, I am stepping into larger roles with greater confidence, managing a broader scope of work with external-facing responsibilities.”

A mindset switch to think about philanthropic ecosystem building (in addition to previous issue-based lens), including the preparation and launch of the Commission on Asian Philanthropy; in parallel, leading our discovery effort for a potential Education to Employment mission in Hong Kong; internally, learning to stretch team members the right amount so they can feel both growth and being supported!

Associate Director
Jan 2025 – Present

Co-leading the Research Secretariat of the Commission on Asian Philanthropy, overseeing multi-country research, with a focus on Indonesia and Malaysia, seeing a much broader world beyond Hong Kong.

Jennifer Chan

"My experience of growth and development at Voyage is one where I grow together with the projects that I’m part of and lead, and where I support others to grow in more meaningful manner. It is perhaps surprising to say that throughout the levels, the types of activities I do are largely similar – analysing, delivering actionable insights, communicating it to the right people – but the scope and level of depth expands, and the types of people you can influence broadens (towards more decision-makers). In my experience, becoming a manager at Voyage does not mean pausing our content / analytical capabilities development to become a people, project or stakeholder manager; rather, it requires you to keep doing the same things but better, and then to start supporting others to do them better too as you work on improving your coaching skills to do that effectively. The step up to Associate Director is most strongly felt with an increase in level of independence to drive our impact mission forward and growing the next manager cohort too to the best version of their leadership."

Built a foundational consulting toolkit while navigating diverse strategy projects across the life course—from early childhood care to end-of-life and dementia services. This was a period of rapid "firsts," learning to translate complex social needs into interview designs, deck-building, and organizational strategy.

Senior Associate
Jul 2020 – Dec 2021

Experienced leadership by managing Intellectual Disability (IDD) strategy projects across multiple cities, eventually becoming a trusted regional subject matter expert. A pivotal milestone was leading a regional portfolio review for an international foundation.

Manager
Jan 2022 – Dec 2023

Transitioned from strategy development to high-stakes program design, leading a team to tackle the complexities of poverty. I facilitated the evolution of "strategy on paper" into a live pilot with 8 NGOs (later 15), feeling the weight of responsibility that these designs would be funded by hundreds of millions in grants. Concurrently, I architected a five-year adult IDD strategy for a leading foundation in the field. (Things are getting real!)

Senior Manager
Jan 2024 – Dec 2025

Moved "all-in" to lead our internal team on the execution of the mega poverty alleviation pilot, along with one of Hong Kong’s largest social service RCT evaluation. Leading a core team of seven and shepherding a broader partner network of 20+, focused on making scalable, impactful judgments. The hardest part of systemic change is aligning everyone toward a shared North Star.

Associate Director
Jan 2026 – Present

Now focused on stewardship of the team and continuing to strengthen our execution capabilities, as well as the translation of field insights into the operational wisdom to achieve lasting policy goals.

Lucia Choi

"My journey at Voyage has been a transformation from finding answers in a "rabbit hole" to building the community that sustain our mission. Growing at the pace our work demands requires us to learn through complex issues in very short periods. For me, the key has been identifying the right teachers-not just internally, but across the sector. Over the past seven years, I have moved from an Associate to an Associate Director by developing deep trust with NGOs, foundations, and universities. They have been my teachers, helping me navigate the nuances of social issues by sharing their lived experiences and institutional wisdom; it is their perspective that fuels my passion to keep me energized today.

Earlier in my career, I resisted the shift to leadership, believing that coaching others was a distraction from my analytical work or that I had to master every task before I could support others. It was the coaching I received from Warren and Jen that redefined my perspective, helping me develop an authentic style rooted in genuine partnership and instant feedback. It is a process that is both painful and rewarding, as everyone at Voyage holds themselves to a very high bar; we reflect deeply as individuals and as a team, learning to give and receive the kind of genuine, constructive feedback that has shaped who we are today. Now, as an Associate Director, I am dedicated to influencing and collaborating with like-minded ones so that we can grow as professionals and shape a better society together."

"There were two major shifts / transitions I have experienced in Voyage that were pivotal for my growth:

Transitioning from three years of strategy consulting to Voyage required a major shift in mindset: moving from delivering for client satisfaction to driving outcomes based on our own goals. I learned to build content and processes based on our team’s collective understanding and diagnosis of the issues, and that to contribute is not just about having the right answers or getting things done as asked, but about knowing how to ask the right questions.

Stepping in to a leadership role felt daunting as it demanded an entirely new skillset in “management” (of project, team, process, partners, etc.). Being in a high-trust environment where I am encouraged to reflect on my strengths and struggles, with the concrete support from Warren and Lucia, has been vital in building my confidence and empowered me as a leader where I can continue to leverage my own strengths."

Experienced a pivotal shift from delivering client- and stakeholder-focused solutions to driving meaningful societal outcomes, drawing on prior experience in consulting and across SOEs and MNCs to integrate strategic vision with operational execution.

Winston Sun

"At Voyage, I experienced a crucial shift in my growth.

From years of consulting and corporate experience working on both client and agency sides, joining Voyage required a fundamental mindset change: from prioritising client satisfaction or providing solutions for different perspectives, to truly driving results for a better society. My strategic vision accumulated at consulting, along with operational experience in SOEs and MNCs, had accustomed me to bridging vision and reality. Here, I realised that contribution isn't about providing perfect answers or simply following instructions, but about asking the right questions and solving real problems.

At Voyage, I needed a comprehensive set of problem-solving skills regarding projects, teams, processes, and partners. In the highly trusting environment, I was encouraged to confront my strengths and struggles, and received substantial support from Warren and Jennifer. This was crucial in building my confidence and allowed me to continue leveraging my unique strengths in integrating strategy and operations. Just as rock climbing demands precision in every step, sailing requires constant adaptation to wind direction, and cooking demands the creation of satisfying flavors, my growth at Voyage is a continuous practice of precision, adaptation, and creation."
